The Horton Technique is a style of modern dance created by Lester Horton between the 1920s and 1940s. It draws on movement from Native American and African dances as well as anatomical studies. Elements of the technique can be found in jazz, lyrical, and contemporary dance. Horton is the foundation of some of the most famous works created by dancer/choreographer Alvin Ailey, and is a core technique of The Ailey School in New York. In this class, dancers will learn the basics of Horton while exploring movement that is designed to test and expand their physical limitations, i.e. strength and flexibility. Dancers will do a warm-up comprised of torso movement, flat backs, lateral stretches and leg swings, isolation and balance exercises, and combinations across the floor. The goal of the class is for dancers to discover a new form of movement and more ways of expansion and lengthening in the body.
