Music Lessons - Q & A

What time of year can we start music lessons?

Since music lessons are individual, they can begin at any time during the year. It is simply a matter of matching lesson type, to teacher availability and registry. Lessons can continue with certain teachers throughout the entire summer.

What is a trial lesson?

If you are deciding between music lesson providers or determining whether your student really wants to take lessons, or checking into a certain instrument, sign up for a trial lesson. A $10 trial lesson fee gives you one half hour to experience an introductory session as well as meet the teacher, and ask questions. Trial lessons are so parent and students alike can discuss and evaluate the experience. They are held during openings in a teacher’s schedule, which enables you to register immediately after determining the right fit.

What is the music make-up policy at Allegro?

Allegro values our teacher’s time and acknowledges the intricate scheduling of the music rooms. If a student gives the office a 48 hour advance notice of cancellation, that student will be asked if they are interested in being considered for a make-up lesson. If the answer is yes, the student’s name will be added to the list of students requesting make-up lessons. When a cancellation is given to the office, staff will then call the first name on the list and offer them that time slot. If the student refuses it, their name goes to the bottom of the list. Students are only considered for make-ups with their regular teacher. Students will be allowed two attempted make-ups per year. There is no guarantee of a match. Students who do not give 48 hours notice will not be considered. Allegro does not prorate tuition due to absences. Another form of make-up also available is that of our Group Music Make-Up Lessons. Offered twice yearly, topics range from guest music educators, to music theory, rhythm, counting, note reading and ensemble experiences. Dates for these group lessons are on our master calendar.

If I don’t have a musical background, or any experience, can I still help my child practice?

Yes, absolutely! We encourage parents to ask the teacher how they can help their student at home. Often, it is as simple as monitoring exercises or the amount of time they spend practicing. If parents know how a piece is to sound they can help listen and advise. Four times a year Allegro holds studio wide observation weeks and music parents are encouraged to come and sit in on the lesson. Twice a year, music evaluations are sent home with the student, this encourages discussion between student, parent and teacher- and keeps goals and accomplishments in the forefront.
