Class Descriptions

  • Advanced Professional Class

    This is the perfect class for adults with previous dance background! Whether you danced through high school or college, are a current professional in the dance world, or are simply looking for an outlet for your dance hobby, this is the class for you. Instruction will be given at an intermediate to advanced pace. Styles such as ballet, modern, and jazz will be offered on a rotating basis by Allegro's faculty.

  • Ballroom

    Ballroom dance refers to a variety of dances which are enjoyed both socially and competitively around the world. Because of its performance and entertainment aspects, ballroom dance is also widely enjoyed on stage, film, and television. No partner is necessary to take a ballroom class at Allegro and all ages can enjoy this universal dance form. Fox Trot, Tango, Swing, Viennese Waltz, Bolero and Cha Cha are just a few of the many styles to be experienced.

  • Ballet

    Classical ballet adheres to traditional training in ballet technique; barre, centerwork, adage, allegro and traveling. Generally Cecchiti based, our progressive syllabus promotes proper technique, body alignment, placement, turn-out, flexibility, strength, musicality, and performance quality. Once weekly, live piano accompaniment is offered.

     

     

    (Ballet 1 – 7–10 year olds)

  • Ballet Basics

    This class is created for students who want to take ballet but can’t invest in the 3-4 hour a week commitment needed for the numerated ballet program. It is perfect for the dancer committed to sports or dance team or for that older student who has always wanted to take ballet class.

     

    (Ballet Basics – 12–18 year olds)

     

  • Boys Only Class

    This just might be the perfect answer to the question: “Are there any other boys in the class?” A balance of structure and high energy this class contains warm-ups, jumps, leaps, turns, jazz, hiphop, self-confidence & camaraderie.

     

    (Boys Only Class – 5-15 year olds)

     

  • Choreography

    Dancers learn the tools of choreography such as line, shape, level, energy and direction to create original dances. Students will experience auditions, castings; run rehearsals, and stage an in-house performance of their original piece.

     

    (12 year olds and above)

     

  • Clogging

    Clogging is an exciting, high energy, percussive dance form that has roots not only in America's earliest folk dances, but also in Europe's various step dances. The dancer's footwear is used musically by striking the heel, the toe, or both in unison against the floor to create audible percussive rhythms. The music used is upbeat and current, the class casual and enjoyable.

     

    (Clogging 1 - 8 year olds and above)

     

  • Company

    The Company at Allegro School of Dance and Music provides a unique and rewarding experience to dancers eager to pursue the many avenues of dance education. Company dancers will enhance both their studio dance experience and their dance technique and repertoire, by attending numerous competitions, conventions, local performances and master classes! Those who have a passion for performing with a competitive edge will be able to expand their horizons with The Company's versatile performance opportunities and venues. Students will improve their inter-personal and communication skills through team building and as well as leadership opportunities as ambassadors of Allegro.

     

    (Senior Company Allegro dancers ballet level 3 and above, by audition)

    (Junior Company Allegro dancers ballet level 2 and above, those interested)

     

  • Creative Movement

    Designed as an introduction to dance, the primary goal of this class is to foster a love of movement. Creative 1 and 2 offers music, movement and rhythm plus freedom of expression. Creative Movement is a great way to step into the dance studio, and an excellent first group activity.

     

    (Creative 1 – 3 year olds by 9-1-11)

  • Dance Conditioning

    This class is designed to improve your technique and performance in all dance forms by strengthening the body’s core (abdominal and back muscles) while improving coordination, balance and alignment and optimizing flexibility.

     

    (12 year olds and above)

     

  • Dance Team

    If you aspire to be on your high school's dance team, this is the class for you. Build strength, and flexibility, while working on your turns, kicks, precision, and teamwork. Add some jazz funk and fun for a great dance class experience.

     

    (11 year olds and above)

     

  • Dance Team 2

    Those currently on your high school's dance team, this is the class for you. Build strength, and flexibility, while working on your turns, kicks, precision, and teamwork. Add some jazz funk and fun for a great dance class experience.

     

    (13 year olds and above)

     

  • Get Active At Allegro

    The second Friday of each month (September-December), Allegro hosts a fun, fantastic, theme-based hour of movement, music and camaraderie! Offered in conjunction with Rochester Park and Rec Adaptive Recreation.

     

    (Persons 2-65 years old and above with developmental disabilities)

     

  • Hip Hop

    After a warm up and workout, stylized movements create short choreographic pieces to popular, yet age appropriate music. Complex rhythms and the most current video- street jazz and funk merge in this high energy, upbeat class.

     

    (Hip-Hop Jr – 5-8 year olds)

  • Jazz

    This genre highlights quickly paced movements danced to current, upbeat music. Capitalizing on elements of flexibility, speed, dynamics and contrast, jazz is a very popular style.

     

    (Jazz 1 – 8-10 year olds)

  • Liturgical Dance

    Liturgical Dance class is built on the belief that dance can be a heartfelt expression of faith and prayer. Body, mind and spirit are connected to enhance the prayer or worship experience. Liturgical Dance can include folk, modern, jazz, interpretive and circle dance styles. Bring what you learn back to your church or bring your church group to liturgical dance class.

     

    (12 year olds and above)

  • Lyrical

    Lyrical is an expressive combination of jazz and ballet. Dancers blend their experiences and emotions with their ballet and jazz technique to tell a story with their movements. Due to the emotive nature, controlled energy and fluid movements, older dancers with a strong ballet background are best suited for Lyrical.

     

     

     

    (Lyrical 1 – 11 year olds and above…ballet class strongly encouraged)

  • Master Class Series

    Allegro offers a monthly opportunity for dancers to learn from accomplished guest artists. The artists may offer classes in ballet & pointe, jazz, modern, or lyrical.

     

    (Ballet 3 level and above...unique to each technique and teachers)

    (Guest dancers 13 year olds and above are also welcome)

     

  • Modern

    This contemporary dance style uses basic principles of movement without the protocol or stereotypes of classical ballet. Dancers explore all types and levels of movement in this class, primarily on the floor. Modern is a universal dance form that is especially suited to beginning dancers of all ages, or as a complement to the classically trained ballet dancer.

     

    (Modern 1A – 8-9 year olds)

  • Pointe

    Dancing en pointe is the progression of ballet technique utilizing pointe shoes that enable the dancer to dance on the tips of their toes. This gives the illusion of lightness and lift. Proper technique and considerable strength in the feet, ankles, legs, knees and core is necessary for a student to dance correctly on pointe, and remain free of injury.

     

    (Pointe included in Ballet 4,5,6)

     

  • Pre-Ballet

    Pre-Ballet offers the young student an introduction to ballet, while retaining their innate creativity. Body alignment, basic ballet technique and terminology merge in the classroom with stretches for flexibility, locomotive skills and creative opportunities.

     

    (Pre-Ballet – 5-6 year olds)

     

  • Pre School Dance

    Designed as an introduction to dance, young students will explore movement, rhythm, freedom of expression and the beginning fundamentals of the cornerstone of all dances, ballet. This is an excellent class to introduce your child to the dance studio and allow them to expand on their natural desire to dance!

     

    (Children – 3-6 year olds)

     

  • Special Needs Dance Class

    This course is designed for children with mild developmental disabilities. A safe studio environment is established for students to explore their physical movement and motor skills, express themselves and gain healthy body awareness. Other goals include: development of group social skills, independence from parents while participating in class, and the joys of movement and music.

     

    (Children 6–12 year olds who are able to move and follow simple directions)

     

  • Tap

    Originating in the United States as a fusion of several ethnic percussive dances, tap dancing combines clarity of sound with rhythm and speed. It’s all about making music with your feet.

     

    (Tap 1 – 5–6 year olds)

  • Theatre Tap

    Beyond the basic footwork, dancers add theme, expression, props, and more to this enjoyable tap experience. Whether it’s based off a Broadway musical or is an original choreography, Theatre Tap Class unites the dancer with performance quality.

     

    (By invitation or audition. Basic tap repertoire mandatory)

     

  • Zumba

    Move and groove to great international music during this energetic and exciting dance workout. This fitness system contains routines that feature aerobic/fitness interval training with a combination of fast and slow rhythms that tone and sculpt the body. You don’t need a gym membership to enjoy the fun of Zumba at Allegro.
